My favs: Modern Cafe and Erte! Of course! Viva Mexico on University Avenue NE and 20th has great food.
Vo's on Washington near the Stop'n'Go for incredible fried potatoes and tofu--the only time I like it. And OK--I'm stepping out on a limb here--but the White Castle at 608 Central Avenue NE for quick, cheap, and not-too-bad-for-you food (the meat is steamed, right?) plus the most hilarious social commentary I've ever heard coming from the retirees who are regulars at the joint late at night. If you don't like dirty jokes, watch out. If you do, try as hard as I do to keep a straight face, because several times I feared the acid-reflux-laughing-jag. If the language gets to be a bit much, give them the shocked innocent look and they'll tone it down. (I'm so prim.) The easygoing retorts from some of the older female workers provides the perfect foil for these guys. Someone ought to make a documentary on this place.
