Minneapolis City Council Member Barb Johnson
plans to propose next week that the council
rescind its directive that the Police
Department proceed with federally mediated
talks with representatives of the city's
 minority communities.

Johnson hopes the move will break a logjam
in the mediation process by removing the
legal basis for a petition that was filed
by community members last month, asking a
court to force Chief Robert Olson to carry
out the council's mandate.
