Well I read this article in the Strib right before the war started (it must
have been a slow news day waiting for the war to start) where General Mills
(the local connection, Mr Moderator) had been graciously supplying cereal to
the men and women stationed in the Middle East. They had found that these
people (remember many of the people serving are still in their teens and
early twenties) preferred name brand cereals like Fruit Loops, Coco Puffs
and the like. But to meet military specifications, the cereal had to meet
two specifications 1) be able to be stored for three years at 80 degrees and
2) survive a drop of 100 feet. So instead of manufacturing it in little
boxes, General Mills manufactured it in foil pouches.

This of course, led me to two thoughts. The first being whose job is it to
chuck things out of a helcopter to see if it survives the 100 foot drop (yes
Corporal Bob, the Fruit Loops made it but I hate to tell you about those
cans of Spam....) and 2) what an interesting concept for both supplying our
troops and any other victims of the war. If we could only chuck the cows
out of the helcopters too so they could have milk with their cereal....
