After writing my last message, a flash clobbered me. Maybe the Cub isn't
FOR the neighborhood that can survive very well without it. Maybe Cub wants
to build for Highland Park but KNOWS HP has a huge NIMBY factor. Residents
don't want anything involving mob parking. Then they peer ACROSS the river
at Longfellow Community and WHAT do they spy? A block with some empty space
which they HOPE doesn't have a strong case of the NIMBYs. So that all the
Highland Park shoppers who cringe at the idea of any big box in their
neighborhood can drive across the Ford Bridge to a Cub that is only barely
"out of the neighborhood". I mean why should Lunds get all the money of
those upscale Highland Parkers? Personally, I find it hard to see Highland
Park folks slumming in a Cub, but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they don't want to
live NEXT to one, but maybe they are already driving to Minnehaha Mall and
would welcome a reduced drive (not to mention a less colorful shopping
crowd....The present Cub has a customer base that is one of the most
colorful anywhere).
But then my question would be "What about west 7th?" West 7th is nothing
but a shopping strip. Seems to me St Paul people would be promoting that. I
know from going to stores down there that the access is very easy from HP.
Well, whatever. At least I've found the sense of this proposal which made
none at all before.
