"Mentally ill" is not a lifestyle choice last I looked. There's been such a mess since community mental health clinics haven't panned out as a replacement for the big residential institutions.
There are lots more seriously distressed folks than the relative handful that live in supervised settings. Peace House and other such drop-in centers are a godsend.
