The Midtown Market opened yesterday for business. I am an avid Farmer's Market shopper and wanted to try the new satellite site. Most importantly because it has NRP funds in and serves as yet another shining example of all the good projects that have happened because of NRP. It's great when one works and all the pieces come together.
The market exceeded my expectations. There were several different vendors there including the cheesehead guy from Wisconsin. I always get a kick out of that cheese hat. The parking was convenient and there was room to move about easily. It could probably take even more vendors. I am sure it will grow. The vegetables looked great yesterday. I learned of a new leafy vegetable that was dark burgandy that looked beautiful in stir fry with shrimp. There was a nice coffee stand with great coffee and pastries. The music was local and good for the listening. People were so thrilled and proud. The biggest thing that thrilled me was watching all the people from the different neighborhoods converging on the place. It was great to watch people connect with one another in yet one more way. Neighbors greeting neighbors and activists from the various neighborhoods touching base. I think that's what they mean when people say "build capacity". I saw capacity being built in just one more way yesterday. Volunteers working countless hours to make the project happen. Those volunteers are to be commended. They did a great job. I hope the market sustains itself. It is really nice to have a market like that over there. This certainly could be a good reason to get off the train at that stop when LRT comes down the track.
