Perhaps insensitive, not racist... When I speak Spanish, I do my best to emulate the accent, rhythms and slang (modismos) that I have learned from listening and watching. However, if it was subject to perception, right or wrong, of me being racist I would probably not try to speak Spanish at all. As it stands, it tells native Spanish speakers that I value them. I wonder if the gang bangers would feel similarly.
Were Mr. Thai's comments taken as racist because he is jumping to conclusions that gang bangers are not nice or polite? Or that they don't speak "The Queen's English"? Did I miss the Mpls List BBQ at Brauer's crib <oops now I did it!> ? I just can not tell who is white and who is black here.
