... Ms. Olson should have been fired back then.WM: I disagree. The Strib doesn't have any particular ax to grind with Johnson Lee other than maintenance of the status quo. However, it is the paper's habit to make a mountain out of a mole hill. All that really happened is that Johnson Lee got a ticket for obstructing traffic by an officer. Big whoop. Who gives a fiddler's farthing? Why is this non-story in the paper? Slow new day is no excuse.
... it's obvious Rochelle [Olson] and her bosses have an axe
to grind with Councilmember Johnson Lee.
I'd also be careful about calling for Ms. Olson's dismissal. Editors at the Strib have the power to insist that all sorts of crapola be included when they don't have a story or when they want to skewer a story to suit. Olson is fairly new at the Strib, and seems to be a general assignment reporter. That's the very bottom of the food chain, reporter wise.
Evidently, the councilmember'sWM: I disagree. Ms. Johnson-Lee's real crime is being African American, that she is also an advocate for her ward just makes the cheese more binding, as it were. I think we're observing, in the Strib article, a demonstration of how institutions cooperate in stirring the race pot. Were the Strib an individual, it would be called spite, I believe.
real crime is being an advocate for the poor and disenfranchised citizens
of Minneapolis.
Smells like racism to me.WM: More than racism, it's how the institutions, like daily newpapers, keep us all caught up in, in this instance, trading e-mails on a non-story. We are up to our arm pits in allegators in our city, state, and nation and a city newspaper is putting filler (if even that) on page B1, I would argue, in order to keep racism current and fashionable locally. For the African American community, it must feel like being pecked to death by ducks.
The real story about something serious was above the fold on B3, "Judge reviews claim of evidence tampering" by David Chanen.
The Strib, through placement, seems to be arguing that an obstructing traffic citation is more important than evidence tampering. Feh!
