I think that you misunderstood the situation.
One of these viruses picks up addresses from email 
lists on the computer it infects, so the owner of
the email address may have done nothing more
stupid than to be on someone else's email list.
I got a number of delivery failures because
of attached viruses.  I traced these emails back to
the originating computer at Harvard.  So someone
at Harvard has my email address.  I'm not sure
what that says about being ill-mannered.

Updating virus software doesn't always help.
The first and only one that I got caught on,
was the first "social engineering" email
virus a few years ago.  It was a day later
before there were virus updates and although
I knew it was emailing from my machine, when
I called the University email help line they 
had no clue what I was talking about.  I think 
they're a little wiser now.  My rule is NEVER
open attaches that you're not expecting, and
email the sender for confirmation when you're 
not sure.
