Thanks to Rep. Keith Ellison for bringing up
this issue once again. This is the subject I
was talking about in my message of April 11,
also titled "Coal Plants on the River."

The Riverside coal plant in Minneapolis and
the High Bridge coal plant in St. Paul would
be converted to natural gas under this plan,
popularly known as "MERP." The PUC has been
holding hearings on this and tonight is the
one for Minneapolis, as Batala-ra mentioned.

There is a big Minneapolis angle here because
people who live or work in the city have to
breathe in a lot more pollution, because these
are the oldest and dirtiest coal burning plants.

Senator Ellen Anderson (my boss) has an op-ed
piece in yesterday's Pioneer Press about this;
here is the link:

http://www.twincities.com/mld/pioneerpress/news/opinion/6779524.htm

I do hope that Minneapolis folks can go to the
public hearing tonight at 7 PM at the Minneapolis
Urban League, 2100 Plymouth Avenue North.

There is widespread support for "MERP," but
there is still opposition from the Minnesota
Chamber of Commerce -- wouldn't it be great if
the MINNEAPOLIS Chamber came out in favor of it,
so that city dwellers could breathe easier???
