There is also nothing in carved in stone that said when the so-called "angry mob" complained that Mr. Jennings had to quit. It seemed quite evident to me that the school board was ready to back their decision to hire him and move forward. I have heard nothing that says they asked him to resign. It was his choice to quit.
That being said, it's time to move forward and choose a new superintendent. Hopefully, the school board will open some sort of dialogue with the community of people who felt their thoughts and opinions were left out of the hiring decision regardless of whether or not a formal policy calls for that dialogue. I am on the Community Leadership Council (a site based management team) for Whittier Community School for the Arts that finished last place in the test scores, is an AYP school and could be closed if something isn't done to change the situation. Quite frankly, we need help to do that. It would be much easier if everyone weren't going to spend months squabbling over who the top dog is going to be. It would also be easier if we hadn't whacked $700,000 from the budget last year. Those funds could have hired 7 of the Pawlenty "super teachers". If anyone knows of other ways we can approach the issues at Whittier while we wait for the Minneapolis School Board and the State Dept. of Education to help us, please let me know. We can use your advice, your time, your effort and your help. The neighborhood invested a great deal of time and effort to get this school built. We know we are being crippled by boundary issues that are being driven by the transportation management plan. We are saddled with a school that is nearly all children of first generation immigrants that have significant language and learning issues. While the problems are certainly more complex than this, we need to start somewhere. HELP!
