By the way. If a list correspondent moves from one city to another, they do NOT move from a place that collects money coercively to one that collects it voluntarily. If it is a civilized place, what changes is the composition of the majority and the minority. There isn't a place with normal services that allows an individual veto on public policy. So, the rules are the same, no matter where you live. All you can really do is find a place where the majority agrees with you. And it is likely you cannot earn a LIVING there. You will have to earn your living where the majority differs with you. Such as in Minneapolis or St Paul. (I researched this earlier and found that the overwhelming majority of Fridley residents did NOT work there. I suspect in wealthier suburbs, the ratio is even more adverse.

From 1978-92 I spent many of my nights delivering bread in greater Minnesota and Wisconsin. Coming back from Duluth, Eau Claire, Rochester, Owatonna, Mankato, Willmar, and St.Cloud at 5 and 6 in the morning I noted that the commuters bound for the city would start appearing at 50 miles and sometimes further out of Mineapolis. That large masses of people are willing to commute a hundred miles or more every workday is proof that our housing is way overpriced and our quality of life isn't so great. Where I work today a quarter of the workforce will be retiring in the next 5 years. Almost none of these folks plan to retire in Minneapolis.

As increasingly the majority of our population are not working the need to live close to a big city job is disappearing. Absent the magnet of good jobs, Minneapolis and other core cities will need to provide as low a housing cost and crime rate as greater Minnesota to attract and keep citizens. If we can do that and throw accessible health care and comprehensive public transportation into the bargain we'll again grow as a city.
