CUAPB DENOUNCES VICIOUS POLICE BRUTALITY INCIDENT IN
NORTH MINNEAPOLISMedia Statement
October 14, 2003
**********************************************
This afternoon, Communities United Against Police Brutality received a call on our hotline alerting us to an incident of police brutality in North Minneapolis. We spent the evening meeting with family members and others. According to our preliminary investigation, this appears to be a particularly vicious attack involving possible anal rape with a toilet plunger stick or similar object.
We are pleased that the FBI will be conducting an investigation into this incident and encourage them to do a thorough job. While they are investigating the Minneapolis Police Department, we would encourage the FBI to walk across the street to the Hennepin County Jail and investigate the October 4th beating and rape of Philander Jenkins.
"We denounce in the strongest possible terms this heinous attack on a member of our community," stated Michelle Gross, spokesperson for CUAPB. She added, "It is shocking to the conscience that two similar incidents involving sexual assault should occur nine days apart by two different law enforcement agencies in Minneapolis."
Communities United Against Police Brutality will continue to advocate for and assist these survivors of police brutality and their families. We are calling for independent medical examinations and for appropriate medical and psychological care for these men in the aftermath of their assaults. In the case of Philander Jenkins, for safety reasons we are also asking that he be moved to Ramsey County jail or alternately that he be taken out of isolation at the Hennepin County jail and permitted to have contact with his family. Finally, we are requesting that the U.S. Department of Justice investigate both the Minneapolis Police Department and the Hennepin County Sheriff's Department.
Communities United Against Police Brutality will be holding a rally and march in North Minneapolis on October 22nd to mark the eighth annual National Day of Protest Against Police Brutality. Demonstrations are expected in dozens of communities across the country on that day. In light of the many recent incidents of police brutality in the Twin Cities, this action takes on an even greater significance.
