Despite a stiff wind the smell of burnt gasoline and melted car interior permeates the neighborhood. About 1:30 p.m. I noted the local gangbangers running from the alley between 3rd and 4th Streets. I saw nothing out of the ordinary: These crackheads often behave like, well, crackheads and are easily spooked. A couple minutes later I heard approaching fire trucks and heard a couple explosions. MPD was already on the scene and our fine firefighters quickly extinguished the conflagration and prevented it spread.
The carcass of a minivan now lines the alley where the gangbangers were running from. Someone is out their wheels. Why? Perhaps the gangbangers are out to send a message, having been busted at Mr. Porter's house and such in recent weeks. I believe this is called terrorism, and when the source of said terrorism or even possible alleged terrorism is beyond our borders our government spends billions to squelch it. But when similar terrorism occurs in a working class neighborhood populated by people of all colors it is all but ignored. Worse yet, we are told we should move to a "better neighborhood".
Tonight in Iraq our soldiers, equiped with the best armaments money can by, will nervously stand guard against terrorist attack. Meanwhile in Hawthorne unarmed citizens will be up all night, hoping to at least be awake and able to flee the next attack. Somewhere in the Defense Department a nameless civil servant will put out a multi million dollar order for a replacement helicopter. Back here in Hawthorne where we can't get insurance we're trying to figure out how to spread out our vehicles and assets so we won't lose everything in one fire.
