Ben, judging from the age of your kids (high school and college age now),
I'd say the system has adjusted so your experience won't be easily repeated.

First, the current community school policy really didn't exist back when you
were picking. Now, if you have a community school and you pick it on your
choice card, you're in.

Also, the district has changed its busing policies to cut costs - that has
the silver lining of reducing travel. That's because the district won't bus
you out of your quadrant (SW, SE, etc.). Long rides are less likely because
you are more likely to go to a school near (or nearer) you.

These days, complaints are likely to come if you don't like your community
school and have to pick another (which could mean long bus rides, and
anxiety about finding the right alternative).
