For people who didn't see it, the University of Wisconsin did a study on literacy, ranking Minneapolis/St Paul at the top of the regions that they studied. They ranked based on education, publications, newspapers, libraries, and booksellers. The study can be found at:
http://www.uww.edu/cities/index.html Minneapolis/St Paul came out in the top ten of all of the rankings except, interestingly, libraries. I thought this was quite telling given the current debate about cutting back the libraries. For folks who don't know, the library system is going through an extremely painful process of laying off about 25% of its staff, a much greater retrenchment than any of the other municipal services that have had to reduce staff. So this trend is not going in the way that we would like. Carol Becker Longfellow REMINDERS: 1. Think a member has violated the rules?
