>>EY: I think it's a bit much to attribute all Lubinski's support on the
city council to "identity politics."<<

Palmer sez:

Maybe, maybe not. I don't think it's outside the realm, nor do I even think
it's wrong to favor identity politics. Going into this process, I wanted a
person of color and was open to another disadvantaged group such as a woman or
GLBT community member, and if they could be from the department, so much the
better. I don't think there's anything wrong with starting out with those ideas
or preferences, but when decision time comes, the bottom line has to be, who
is right for the job. Regardless of politics and preferences who makes the
best fit. And in this case it's McManus.

That's your opinion - and the opinion of Rybak. My guess - Lubinski didn't stand a chance getting appointed by Rybak - because she was perceived as being too much of an Olson protege - and we all know Rybak was gunning for Olson from the time he became mayor.

I think Lubinski was equal - or better in qualifications to McManus. She has accomplished much in her leadership at the 3rd Precinct - which is a very challenging precinct. Others on this list have talked in more detail about Lubinski. A City Council member told me that another city (not sure which one) rated Lubinski more highly than McManus when doing a search for chief.

I also appreciate that she had the courage to be out as a police officer. I think that helped improve police services to Gay and Lesbian residents. I can personally speak to that - because I've had contacts with the police when the issue of being gay has come up - and the Minneapolis police were respectful and professional. It also improved the climate for Gay and Lesbian officers on the force. Her being honest about this was taking a significant career risk - and also helped open the doors for other GLBT officers. It is nice to see Out Gay Officers from Minneapolis at a booth at Gay Pride.

The atmosphere in the Police Department in Minneapolis and St Paul for GLBT officers is quite different. GLBT officers feel the need to stay in the closet.

>>I also think the whole thing saying that because Lubinski and Gerold are
internal candidates, they will be like John Laux is another red herring.<<

No guarantees, but as people are advancing the idea that an internal
candidate is better for the job and for bringing about change because their internal
and change will best come from the inside (Niziolek advanced this last night,
quoting an MIT professor even), than one does have to consider what internal
candidates have done. It's not a red herring to hold this up as an example and
ask the question. No guarantees, I'll agree, but the question should be
examined.

We'll just have to agree to disagree, Jonathan, I still think Laux is a red herring. Sharon Lubinski and John Laux are very different people. I also think other examples of other police forces - beyond Minneapolis is better evidence for or against - and that sounds like what Council Member Niziolek's point was. If the MIT Professor has studied this issue, I'd take that seriously.

Well, Eva, what you've done is give me a ticket for littering because you
don't like how I drive. More and still, I think you're widely missing the point.
Mark was questioning his leadership style and it's effectiveness by making
statements that I think were at least inaccurate, but may have had merit,
therefore I asked for clarification. If he is questioning the Chief's ability with
inaccurate statements, than addressing those statements addresses the core
statement. Much has already been said, including by me, about how effective a
leader and manager McManus. Regardless, you don't get to pick what I decide to
address or discuss.

For the record, Jonathan, I certainly don't want to pick what anyone else decides to post here on this list. I am just responding and giving my opinions about what you said - and how it came across. Readers on this list decide - and respond if they so chose.

Obviously you think McManus is the best person for the job. I have some reservations - but I do agree with your assessment that at this point, the vote in the council is whether to confirm the Mayor's nomination.

>>I objected to the way you used G Anderson's column in this case - in my
opinion, the the mention of street cops in that column was in a different context
than what Mark Anderson referred to in his post.<<

Fine to ibject, but still not your choice what I decide to discuss.

Again, I didn't say it was my choice. I was expressing my opinion - not trying to tell you what to post.

It
wasn't the same context, but that was the point, because that was the only case
that the word "alienate" even was used in referring to McManus. Mark statements,
in my opinion, were inaccurate, he already admitted to reading basically the
same things I posted, yet he came to a different conclusion to which I can
find nothing to substantiate it. That makes those statements false in my mind,
and that was what I was addressing.

I think Mark's statements are subjective - and yours are too. I don't think he's lying because he interprets articles differently than you do.

>>6 council members? Well he needs to convince a 7th to get confirmed.<<

Again, not even tangentially related to the actual point.

True..... But as I understand it, 7 votes (or maybe 8 according to Channel 5) are needed for confirmation.
