Strartribune 1/25/04
The Stratribune editorial writers aren't paying very close attention to
what they themselves write. It was actually only two years ago when
they said that they expected Jennings to "help the district weather
challenging financial times," not almost three as the said today. They
acknowledged then that "A national group of school financial officials
had awarded Minneapolis top honors for several years in a row, placing
the district in the top 1 per cent of well managed schools
nationally." Today, they repeat the proclamation (the system is
broken) of the lame duck school chief who had no prior experience at
running a large, complex organization and who was not successful at
helping the district district weather challenging financial times. It
was facing channeling times when he showed up - as he leaves it is
broken.
It would have been much more mature of them if they had simply said,
"Well, he wasn't any more successful at running the district than he was
at running the Chamber, so we should now get somebody with real actual
experience to do this very crucial job." Calling the system broken and
proposing half-baked, unlikely solutions is not bold; it is
irresponsible and childish.
