I need my car for work (commuting to schools and meetings outside my office), so I've actually got a good excuse for not taking the bus. But even when I lived minutes away from a job that kept me inside all day, I couldn't stand to wait at a stop if the temp dropped below 30 degrees, even in my massive blanket of a winter coat.
I moved here from NY five years ago, and was completely spoiled by a subway system that allowed me descend into its heated underground a block from my apartment and emerge a block from my office. When I lived in Chicago, the pain of taking the el train in the winter was eased by patron-operated heat lamps suspended at the outdoor stops.
Now, with the umpteen-below temps of the past few weeks, I even leave a little early to rescue my car-less friends and their kids from having to lose epithelials to the bitter winds. And I look for other ways to help the environment and assuage my CO2 emission guilt.
Mea culpa, but mea toasty. -- Sincerely,
Shauna
