I was at Housing Day on the Hill yesterday and went to a training by an
experienced lobbyist.
As John Palmer had insisted that I come up with a plan to give to Mayor
Rybak for ending homelessness...I wanted to present a different view presented by
that lobbyist.
When asked what to say to legislators who say "Can't do much because of
the budget cuts" this was his response:
As citizens we are not required to do legislator's jobs for them. They
were elected and paid to come up with solutions and respond to constituents
who put forth what the priorities should be.
As constituents we can lobby to insist on what we feel needs priority---
we do not need to do legislators jobs for them.
So the same would hold true for the Mayor (and city council)--- it is
their job to put forth a committment, a plan and set time lines to end
homelessness in Mpls.
Going to a memorial service after a man has died on the street is not
good enough. For the Mayor to go and simply say how sad it is...is not good
enough.
It is not just sad--- it is a social crime.
So, I expect Mayor Rybak to respond to his constituents, and place a
priority on ending homelessness and putting in place a concrete plan.
He seem tireless when it comes to doing this for a new stadium.
