WM: Tread lightly when you speak of Cincinnati. Tis my home town and has a life of its own with quality standards quite fine.
Growing up there, we had no opera house; opera was done at an outdoor amphitheater. We urchins from the projects could hear the opera by just standing or sitting outside the gates if we had parental permission to go all the way across town. We couldn't see what was going on, just hear it. This amphitheater abutted the Cincinnati Zoo. When the orchestra swelled for the dramatic moments of arias and the diva's vocals would pour into the clear night air and drift to our unwashed ears, the elephants, greatly in tune with the opera, would trumpet, the lions and tigers roar. It was so kewl!
Cincinnati now has an opera house, quite a good one. But a major component of opera has been removed with this advance.
