You know, sometimes this list can be contentious and on at least a couple of occasions it makes me sad to read peoples opinons. The bigotry expressed when the Met Council chose to add Somali to ticket machines for Light Rail is one of those that comes to mind.

The out-pouring of support on this list for gay marriage in Minneapolis, however, brought a smile to my face. The additional comments about how much $ San Francisco is taking in for marriage license fees (not to count hotel rooms, etc.) just made the smiler broader.

I doubt R.T. is waiting for my personal ok, but I say go for it! It'd be a great way to put our fair city on the map.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

And to echo what Wally Swan, President of the Mpls Board of Estimate & Taxation told me last weekend, San Francisco is collecting about $80,000/day in extra marriage license fees from the City Clerks office. Or about 2 years worth of their normal license income in just the past few days. To say nothing of the extra hotel rooms rented, meals eaten in city restaurants, etc. Quite a mini-economic boom for San Francisco.

Think what Minneapolis could do with an extra $80,000/day income. Have libraries open more than half the day. Close a few less schools. Actually snow plow the alleys. Etc.
