Here at the Phillips Eco-Enterprise Center, The Green Institute is
currently installing the largest photovoltaic array in the state. You
can see the panels on the roof when you drive by at 2801 21st Avenue
South (near Hiawatha & 28th).

And once the weather turns warm, we will also install the metro region's
largest "extensive" green rooftop. Extensive green rooftops increase a
building's energy efficiency, double the life span of the roof membrane,
manage a large amount of stormwater on-site, mitigate the urban heat
island effect, and help to clean up urban air pollution.

Our green rooftop will be visible at very close range to thousands of
LRT passengers daily as the Hiawatha Line rises to pass over Lake
Street.

Green Rooftops are being considered for the Minneapolis Central Library,
Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Midtown Exchange, the former Pillsbury A
Mill, a planned Minneapolis maintenance facility in Fridley, and several
other developments.

While the Twin Cities are behind cities like Chicago, with a 10,000
square-foot green rooftop on its City Hall and 100 other green rooftop
projects in the works, we are also making great strides.

We will partner with a Toronto-based organization called Green Roofs for
Healthy Cities to co-host a day-long conference on green rooftop
technologies that will be held on Friday, April 23 at the U of M's
College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

How about such a project here in Minneapolis. We've got lots of city
owned
roofs and I bet most of them are covered in gravel. How about the high
schools, park board HQ, or even our own convention center?

Mayor Rybak could freshen up his 'green side' and win a few votes in the

process. My vote might be swayed by some sustainable 'green' initiatives
in
our fair city. It only saves money in the long run.

SF is on the green map, as is Chicago with its city hall roof garden,
where's Minnespolis?
