I do not patronize chains because they generally offer inferior products at
high prices (or, in the case of Wal-Mart, inferior products at low prices).
Every time I have checked out a new place (usually a restaurant), I have
found that a locally-owned business is far superior. But they are popular
nonetheless. Obviously, people like the standardization.

Even though I don't like chains, it is not up to me where they will locate,
it is up to the economics that the community will provide. Nobody's choices
are being sacrificed for the public good. This is a far different situation
than, for example, the kind of car you drive, which has a very real impact
on the community at large, and thus merits community involvement.
