Two things about the Mayor's schools post:

He claims to want citizen involvement but then
dismisses the citizen committee that recommended that
a new Roosevelt library be built at 23rd Avenue South
and 38th Street. Not only did this recommendation
solve the problem of an antiquated, non-accessible
building, but it placed a new building (with likely
lower operating costs) within walking distance of more
actual patrons.

Another issue with the current Roosevelt (in addition
to the non-ADA compliant bathrooms) is that too many
people believe it is a library only for Roosevelt
school students--moving the library back into the
school would only support that erroneous view.

The advisory committee was made up of many
neighborhood residents, including representatives from
the library users, Standish Ericcson Neighborhood
Association, the church next door to the current site,
the adminstration of Roosevelt school, the city
council (Sandy Colvin Roy and Gary Schiff attended
meetings), the Library Board (represented by Rod
Kruger), and me (as a member of the Friends of the
Library).

The Mayor's free to put up all the "trial balloons" he
wants, and we welcome them in this forum. It's clear
he doesn't like the recommendation of the Roosevelt
advisory team, but the advisory team's process is
clearly NOT an example of the different city agencies
not working together. Currently, the plan is on hold
as the Library administration re-evaluates its capital
improvement plan.

And by the way, I second Doug Mann's contention that
the schools problem is not too much space but too few
teachers. He provided more data than I could, so I'll
leave it at that.
