Thanks for asking Mayor,
My quasi-spouse lives in Loring Park and I now live in St. Paul (hence
the "quasi").She works at St. Cates and as she's never had a drivers license
let alone a car, she takes the bus to work every day. She's always found a
positive balance in the financial versus hassle equation.
Now of course, she's fifteen miles from a job she's to start at 7:30a.m.,
during the end game of winter, with her only commercial recourse a taxi
round-trip that would cost around $50 a day.
She's been staying with me and I've been getting up two hours early to
drive her to work, then taking a break in my work day to bring her home. I'm in
the midst of forging a 1,000 square foot apartment while trying to survive
in the original 330 sq. ft. space. In other words, we're living in a
construction zone. Can't think of another situation that might more inflate our
"quasi-ness". We're living in a closet when we really preferred living next door.
St. Cates has started a call-out for car pooling and folks are starting
to hook up The thing is though, I sense a disaster mentality from everything I
hear. These good folks are all saying things like "Hey we're in this all
together, no big deal. Jump in and I'll take ya home". That's great of course but
that attitude can't last forever. It's not supposed to.
I won't even start on the Taxpayers #%$#^%$ cause I'd be thrown off this
list for the next millennium, but what those ^*&#$'s did not comprehend was
the compassion that the working folks of these towns have, and their heartfelt
response to this mass hardship.
Thanks also to Maria who has driven m'lady back to Minneapolis a couple
times, refused all thought of money and regaled the conversation with tales of
how much better health coverage was for her in Mexico. Maria can vote this
next time around.
