Maybe people who are so quick to judge Chief McManus for temporarily
suspending, with pay, officers while an investigation takes place should
remember that police officers charge people every day with crimes which are,
after investigation, dropped or for which people are later acquitted. This is
considered "normal" despite the damage such charges often do to the reputations
of innocent people--and the costs they must incur to defend themselves. Every
day in Minneapolis people get picked up on charges that are later dropped. In
this case the officers continued to be paid and an independent investigation
took place. That's a lot better than the treatment a lot of innocent people
get. It seems like professional police officers should understand and
appreciate this.

Wasn't one of the three officers suspended rather involved in the Hard Times
Cafe prosecution fiasco--trumped up charges that did damage to the Cafe's
reputation and cost it a considerable amount in legal fees? I don't remember
many calls for the officers involved in that unjustified prosecution to
resign. The cafe certainly never received any apology or reimbursement for
lost business or its legal fees.
