John Delmonico quoted in the Star Tribune: "If a citizen alleged that an officer called them names or threatened them, an investigation would be immediately opened," said union president Sgt. John Delmonico. "We have a pretty substantial allegation of the chief calling these officers names and threatening them. Is there some sort of double standard for department heads?"
Give me a break. Up until recently, citizens had absolutely no recourse when they were treated inappropriately by a cop (unless they had the good luck of being related to someone in City Hall, as with the fourteen year old nephew of one of the Mayor's aides). I'm beginning to suspect that the accusations against McManus are bogus---an orchestrated attempt by some disgruntled cops who are afraid of reform. Even though the three high ranking police officers have been cleared of criminal wrong doing, it's clear that the investigation of Officer Ngo's shooting was botched and nothing was done to correct the course of this snafu until McManus took over the department. Members on this list can accuse McManus of misogyny all they want, but I don't think Officer Gerhold is going to look too good after the dust settles. Regarding the bus strike: Despite Wizard's remarks, I still stand by my assertion that the Transit Workers are being ill-served by their union and the public relations consultant they hired. It takes blood and guts to out maneuver the likes of Pawlenty and Bell, not an image makeover. Peter Schmitz Downtown St. Paul (But still working in Minneapolis.) REMINDERS: 1.
