Dave Thune, CM in St Paul is introducing a resolution to oppose the anti-gay state constitutional amendment. The City of Minneapolis has not as of yet taken a stand. Will St Paul do this before the City of Minneapolis?
This amendment - if it passes statewide - will prohibit gay marriage and civil unions - since it goes after all legal instances of marriage. It also could make it more difficult for gay partners to visit their loved ones in the hospital. This is a mean spirited amendment with the intend of pandering to those who are hostile to gays.
From the Star Tribune Story on the Anti-gay Activist rally at the capitol:
http://www.startribune.com/stories/587/4678722.html
Johnson, who said he heard one prayer in the rotunda condemning all homosexuals to hell, said the anger of some of the demonstrators reduced his office staff to tears.
Johnson described some of the rally-goers as the most vicious and mean-spirited he has ever heard in his elected career.
"This is more about politics and certifying right-wing conservative credentials for the 2004 election," Johnson said afterward.
EY: Where is Mayor Rybak? Shouldn't the Mayor of Minneapolis speak up publically against this mean spirited and bigoted amendment? Thanks to Dean Johnson for speaking out against this. His courageous vote in favor of the Human Rights Act in 1993 was the reason that he ended up leaving the Republican Party and becoming Democrat.
Will any elected officials from Minneapolis testify against the anti-gay amendment at the hearing on Friday? I would especially like to see my city council person - Natalie Johnson Lee speak out publically against this amendment.
