WM: Yes, I do have a political agenda. Better wages for all working stiffs. History shows that when the big unions' pay scales go up, other pay scales begin to inch up too. Kewl!
My Response: It appears we agree. As I said, "If you REALLY care about the poor, you must be upset at both sides of this strike. If you choose one side, then you have a political agenda." You are not trying to help the poor, you are arguing for better paid working stiffs. I am ok with political agendas. I am just amazed the drivers (and some supporters) are using stranded poor folk as a reason to support their agenda. 1) Most of the riders DEPENDANT on the MTC don't receive the pay and benefits the MTC drivers refuse to work for. 2) Given the no new taxes message, the result of a drivers victory will likely lead to a fare increase and/or service decrease. If we really want to help the poor, we would argue for increased funding of transit AND reduced driver benefit package. Then we could increase service AND lower fares. That is helping the poor. I believe both sides are selfish. I see the agony of it everyday. Regards, Bill. Whittier Landlord P.S. Jennifer Pedersen wrote "I'm amazed how many people look at the bus drivers' wages as if they are taking something away from the rest of us." How can we increase anyone's wages/benefits without taking money from someone else? There must be an economic model I am unaware of.... REMINDERS: 1. Think a member has violated the rules?
