Just to add my two bits about the MPRB and wi-fi. The reason that the
MPRB is considering getting into the wi-fi business is the old business
adage..LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. It seems in designing our parks
within walking distance of most homes in a six block area the MPRB is in
a nice position to cover not just the parks themselves but possibly the
entire city of Minneapolis for wi-fi access. Commissioner Erwin
presented the idea last year at one of the meetings. Making the whole
city wireless is a great idea. It seems that some city in CA (the name
escapes me) used the opera house to provide access for almost their
entire downtown (per my Uncle Pete formerly of Northeast now retired in
Sunnyvale, CA from HP).
The logistics are a whole other kettle of fish as a whole lot of money
making toes would be stepped on and the PUC would probably need to be
involved etc... The key here is that using the MPRB buildings because of
their location is why the MPRB would need to be involved if only in
leasing out storage space/roof access. MPRB could then use that money to
harvest the milfoil, fix the hoops, build the skateparks, place the
porta-potties, keep the fountains flowing and my personal favorite keep
the wading pools filled.
