I am not sure exactly how the Crown Hydro project would lead to the entire collapse of the falls. The Hydro project would be built within an existing foundation using an existing head and tailrace. The areas were filled in in the early 60s with various debris from the old gateway. Thus it is my understanding that they are simply removing the later soils and stabilizing what buried is beneath.

As for the geology of the area, I have bit of understanding. The rock that formed the falls is very very hard [comparable to granite] a few feet thick. This thin layer of hard limestone also forms the Bridal Veil and Minnehaha Falls.. The erosion of the falls occurred because of the softer sandstone and limestone beneath this hard layer. As water moved over the layer, it eroded under the edge. Eventually gravity does it magic and pulls the hard piece down as the weak support from underneath deteriorates. The Hydro project water would move over this hard layer and fall through an existing tunnel that would likely be lined, sending it out the tailrace- No threat to the falls. Also, as the stone arch bridge is a historic landmark, I am sure the necessary precautions would be taken.

I would like to see more localized power sources as well as an opened end expanded headrace. The extension of the stone arch is a concern as are the silly railing that the Park Board claims they'll need. Are there railing lining the river banks? I'm there aren't surprised because the Park Board sure is in love them.
