This is all getting very old. Aside from Jayne Khalifa's lack of Minneapolis residency, there's not a scratch on her record or ability to serve this city as its Civil Rights Director.
Her membership in The Links has nothing to do with her ability to manage a civil rights advocacy position and her ability to move comfortably in a variety of political, economic and racial circles should be seen as an attribute, not a detriment nor a distancing factor for communities of color. In fact, no real change in civil rights will ever occur as a result only of work done in the African American community. Only the cooperation and effort of the majority community in concert with protected class communities will effect the changes necessary for equity in society's institutions and toward dispelling the cultural racism in all of us. Mr. Hodges self-serving series of emails began to sound disturbingly like sour grapes. I had no idea he was a candidate for the position Khalifa has won fair and square. Furthermore, the position of Civil Rights Director belongs to no one community or subculture of the entire city. A well-credentialed and capable candidate for serving as an advocate of the city's human and civil rights responsibilities as well as a good manager of an office (a rare combination of qualities) need not even be a person of color. I've known Jayne Khalifa pretty well for over 20 years and, as with anyone in positions of responsibility anywhere, she's had her share of naysayers and supporters. But one never takes on responsibilities and executes them with unanimous consent of their subordinates or colleagues. It's the nature of management and leadership. Her talents should be unquestioned. She's a brilliant woman. She should only be judged on her performance in the office, not her memberships in social groups. Let her do her job.
