I share Mr. Stack's desire for the Mississippi River to run free.

The Crown Hydro project inlet water race is in the basin above the falls. These
water races predate the lock by some ?80 years?. Recently the water races were
daylighted, and water has been successfully run through them. Currently they
are stagnate as the water inlet race has a few boards blocking the flow.

It would be one of the last sources from the river to go dry. That statement is
bound to explode in discussion when placed against the background of drawing
down the pools above the falls over the next fifty years.

The level of water going over the falls is determined a hundred miles above the
falls by a series of dams. Visually it does not make much difference if there
is six inches or a foot of water going over the skirt of the falls. One can
only view the falls from a distance.

Thank you to everyone who put attention to the Crown Hydro project. This will
not be the last issue of concern to the Mighty Miss.

Truly,

It seems like more people every year are appreciating the
river in Mpls as a wonderful natural amenity. We live at
the very top end of the Mississippi River lock and dam
system. I see the day in the future when the three Mpls
locks and dams will no longer be considered worth the $3
million per year taxpayer expense and the environmental
cost. This day may come in 20 years or it may come in 90
years, but I firmly believe it is coming. And I sure would
love to see it in my lifetime.

So, in large part because of this particular viewpoint,
I, for one, am not in favor of installing developments
like Crown Hydro that may possibly delay the freeing of
the river in Minneapolis - or reduce the grandeur of the
falls when the river is allowed to flow free.
