I find it interesting that a number of messages on this list regarding the drinking at the capital have nothing to do with Minneapolis, yet they take the time to attack the messenger (the TV station) and the Republicans. At least I know the priorities of these list members.
Tom Searles Waconia, Twp. Trying to comply to the rules by pointing out messages on the Minneapolis Issues list without replying to any of the off-topic messages... Some examples: "We could also posit the notion that this legislative session drove some people at the Capitol to drink. This is truly a tempest in a tea pot" "Point taken. I shouldn't let the FOX News Corporation's prediliction for coddling GOPers and their issues skew my responibility to make arguments that are not just "fair and balanced," but on point. It is also unfair of me to assume that our local Fox affiliate is as decidedly right of center on its reporting as the national cable network." "Anyway, the point I ultimately wanted to make was that there seems to be some bigger things going on in our state to warrant the level of outrage that has been devoted to this "story." Like, for instance, the fact that our state corrections department is housing convicted sex offenders with "metally ill and mentally retarded patients amid conditions that included roach and rat infestations." (Lopez, Minneapolis Star Tribune, May 27, 2004)" "I guess I choose to direct my outrage to a government agency that talks tough about "cracking down" on sex offenders but doesn't really seem to care about where the offenders we do have in custody are." I can't begrudge republicans for wanting to make light of this "story" - "The drunk DFL law maker well...... look at the voting records. You'd have to be drunk." If the FOX news crew had decided to go across the street, where the GOP members of the Senate have their offices (as they are in the minority), and "investigated" the staffers and lobbyists who were drinking over there I would be making the same jokes. Instead, I am left to ponder the gravity of Governor Pawlenty's Corrections Department allowing sexual predators to live amongst, and prey on, eldery Minnesotans with Alzheimer's and mental disabilities. I guess if I had to choose between the two, I would much rather be able to make jokes about drunk republicans." REMINDERS: 1. Think a member has violated the rules?
