RUBN ROSARIO: Porter is just trouble for community leaders

RUBN ROSARIO

Drop this guy like a worm-infested apple.

This is a public service announcement to those community
leaders in Minneapolis who stubbornly continue to defend
convicted drug dealer Stephen Porter and his assertion
that he was sodomized with the wooden end of a toilet
plunger during a drug raid in North Minneapolis in October.

>From the start, this caper smelled about as foul as a
long-worn sneaker. The two police officers accused were
cleared Friday after a federal investigation.

There was the less-thanconvincing performance Porter gave
during a news conference a few days after the allegation
was announced by former Minneapolis Police Chief Robert
Olson, who called for the FBI inquiry.

Flanked by community activists, Porter grimaced in apparent
pain, sobbed, and paused at times for dramatic effect as he
recounted an incident strikingly similar to the very real,
shocking and brutal attack on Abner Louima, a Haitian
immigrant, inside the bathroom of a New York City police
precinct in 1997.

Porter also needed some work on his entrance and exit.
He was caught on TV shuffling into the news conference,
hunched over and limping on one leg, barely three hours
after he was seen walking out fine from jail lockup. He
left the news conference noticeably limping on the other
leg, and then topped it off with "The Dive'' a sudden
and very suspect collapse to the floor.

There were also the very real abrasions to his rectum.
Those injuries were challenged by reports that he had a
history of using his anus as a storage locker for cocaine bags.
