What Jim is trying to point out IMHO, is that the city continues to ignore existing
parking issues when allowing for new developments.
You mention your area of Loring Park. Parking there is truly difficult to find on the
street. What would you think of a 20 story building being build there with not quite
enough parking for the units the building would contain?

Jim was pointing out areas that have parking problems already, and the city Ok's
projects that amplify the problem, not mitigate it.

Now for my neighborhood. 50th and Hiawatha. Those residents have come to rely on the
street being available for parking. Now comes the LRT station and the drivers that
come to it, park, ride downtown. Now there is less on street parking for the people
that were already there. Now lets add the possibility of a new food establishment at
that corner without adequate parking. If I lived near there I would not be favorable
to the new food establishment, or that thrilled with the idea that I would have to pay
for a parking permit to park in front of my house.

I live just far enough from 50th & Hiawatha to not have to deal with parking problems,
YET. I am glad the LRT is up and running, and hoping to see another food
establishment on that corner. Am I pleased that my city was anti parking at the LRT
stations until just recently? NO.

Parking will be a problem until we give up our cars enmass, and that will not happen
any time soon. I wont give up mine. I will walk to the LRT and go to a movie
downtown now though. I have to pay for block E somehow.

"In my opinion the City should rectify any parking problem caused by the
City. If a City decision creates the necessity for a critical parking
district then each housing unit built previous to that decision should
receive two parking permits with either their water bill or their tax
bill. People have purchased houses, or built housing and apartments with
the belief that there would be adequate parking. In the higher density
inner city this included on-street parking. If not Minneapolis then
Hennepin County, who also taxes real estate, should be providing those
permits"

I think it's fair to say that if you want the luxury of ample on-street
parking then you should have to pay for it. When you come over to my
neighborhood (Uptown), be sure to park in one of the pay lots, though we
usually have some on-street parking within walking distance.
