After sitting thru pre-LRT meetings, and dealing with them before the
tracks were done and the trains were running; all they were at all
interested in is getting us to "buy their train". I read the newspaper
too; however I disagree. I do not blame the city, nor the the city
council. As a matter of fact my city council person Gary Schiff has
been extremely pro-active in all of the issues I have brought to him
regarding the LRT. Including an on-line petition to stop the blaring of
the ridiculous "fog" horns they were using, and the fast response of the
critical parking petition. And no we are not a bunch of neighbors
blowing hot air so to speak. From the very beginning this has been
Metro Transits project, every aspect of it has been to benefit the
project. While the concept of public transportation is a necessity and
a "must" and while I am resolved to say they had to start somewhere ( a
be-grudged resolved)how it was done without proper planning and a "wait
and see" concept about the parking was unforgivable. The LRT was going
to happen regardless. Just like the construction of the stations had to
be tolerated as well. Which if you lived and slept next to it; you'd
know what I mean. The "just" of this matter is the train should have
been built with adjacent park and rides to all the stations. A city
street with residential homes is not a "park and ride". They were smart
enough to have bike racks on the trains, lockers available at some
stations, armed Metro Transit cops, air conditioned cars,.....safety to
a A+! But park and rides....??? I feel no need to defend our position
as neighbors, nor our desire to have our streets safe, and not packed
like sardines the LRT on the night of a Vikings game.
As for the media...just like Noam Chomsky writes about media
manipulation. It's the same thing here. Channel 5 only wants to know
how mad we are. Not why we are mad, or what solutions would be
gratifying to all. The park and rides to be opened at the mall and
other areas; I hope will take some of the parking off the streets. But
I doubt it will change the mind of a lot of the people who want to park
less than a block away. And one last point the park and riders, or the
"hide and riders" are not being intimidating by the residents; they are
intimidating us. I still look to the Metro Transit folks to be
"proactive" in solving this problem. A small gesture of support would
go along way; but I am sure I am dreaming.
