> I am fortunate Wizard to know alot about the Flats. A very dear friend of
mines father was a painting historian of the flats. I have seen close to
60-70 paintings ranging from the early 1900 into the late twenties. I have
read the book, seen the video and along with first hand stories found it to
be facinating. It has a rich history which included the wonderful Irish!
This is a point for ART....85 years later, history can be told by someones
painting long after math problems have been solved and forgotten about. This
was a man who was intelligent and wanted to go to school but had a family
and no money...so he painted. I doubt had he been a math teacher, would we
have this wonderful visual story of this particular area or would we even
know of the man. I believe kids need to learn to read, write, and learn
their math. But some kids are more visual than others, they relate to
pictures and colors before words and figures, they relate to animals more
than toys. they want to play in mud and clay instead of reading a book.
Schools need to be prepared for this education also. This is a child who
will not be in step with the rest because their drum is being pounded as
they twirl around while the flute solo is being played for the more
subdued. They are the people who will give us patterns for wallpaper, designs
for cars, pictures for our walls and songs in our hearts...the list goes
on. Life would be real boring without this group and it has nothing to do
with their ability or not to do an equation.
