Tony,

Commissioner Mason has been trod roughly upon for the past few months (maybe years) for requiring some fiscal responsibility out of the Board. During the meeting of August 18th when she actually represented the public who elected her by questioning Interim Superintendent Gurban about the $400,000 planned move of the park police she was threatened (veiled yes but still threatened) by Commissioner Dziedzic. As a constituent of Commissioner Dziedzic I requested an apology on behalf of Commissioner Mason and the constituents he claims to represent during Open Time at the MPRB. He conveniently left the room before I spoke (the agenda gave notice of why I was speaking) and then on camera ripped up the copy I handed him at the end of the meeting (my neighbor saw it on cable). During the last meeting of the MPRB the Big 5 voted to approve the "cleansed" agenda of the August 18th meeting. If Mr. Gurban is doing such a great job why must his work be hidden and never see the light of day. Why can he not defend it rather than be defended by the Big 5 who deftly put him in place last December. As a mother who had to organize a team of defenders to keep our summer park staff in this year's budget I have many doubts about Mr. Gurban's ability to actually create and defend a reasonable budget. I fear greatly for our system which is becoming more commercialized and less user friendly ( the new budget cut is the Jump In magazine that advertises rec sports, and events) all the time. Let's hope that the FIX truly isn't in as we the citizens of Minneapolis deserve a top person for the top park system.
