I disagree. Although in some cases changes in-group labels are
liberating for members, I don't think there's a big push by gays to be call "queer" by the larger community or by women to be called "girls."
The incident that sparked this discussion, and in many many other cases, is about outsiders being chastised and persecuted for failing to conform to the expectations of minorities.

WM: Actually, younger and very young GLBT persons do seem to prefer queer. Younger women seem to think that "chick" is OK, as in Dixie Chicks. But that's neither here nor there. African Americans appear to think that people of color would have been preferable in the article by David Channing (or is it Channen?).
Actually, Channing was chastised for using a term associated with Jim Crow. Anyone who is more hip than a bucket of hair should realize by now that some terminology is not OK. Include in that group of words it is best not to use "nigra," "boy" for a grown man, etc.

You can call me whatever you want. If it's just the case of being

called "Mikey," then I can choose to not associate with you.

WM: Well, now, that's the point isn't it? I daresay those Mpls. police officers would not choose to associate with Channing, but, since he reports for the daily newspaper of this city, they have no choice but to contend with his writing when it is directed at them. They cannot vote him out.

We're discussing a person be reprimanded for a minor syntactic derivation.

WM: Apparently, it is not considered a "minor syntactic derivation" by those it is written to describe.

My objection to this type of reaction is that it has been used repeatedly in academia to restrict freedom of expression and enforce
conformity to particular sets of social norms.

WM: What's done in academia is not at issue. We're discussing what terms are used in the daily newspaper. If using the term 'people of color' restricts your freedom of expression or enforces conformity to particular sets of social norms, that seems like a personal problem to me.
