It might be interesting to point-out that the comment which actually came into question was made in a private format - an email sent by a newspaper reporter to a precinct inspector.

While I do not condone racial insensitivity, and the claim might be made that it in fact was not an error on the reporters part, based upon his recent article, I also do not condone publicly dressing someone down when there are other avenues that might be used. Maybe pick-up the telephone and call the guy and tell him your thoughts on the matter? Let him know you find his garmmar offensive and if he wishes to have a working relationship, that it must change?

Not too terribly long ago, one of my neighbors emailed the executive director of JACC with their concerns that the police were not doing enough to provide adequate safety in our neighborhood. This email was forwarded to Inspector Banham, and his response (to the director) was that he had better things to do with his time than to respond to ridiculous and unrealistic comments. Long story short, his response was forwarded (by the E.D.) to our neighborhood email tree, and was not very well-received needless to say. We asked for an opportunity to clear the air on this issue in a private meeting with Inspector Banham and his boss. They declined... The City does not begin to understand the lost opportunity they had to gain much-needed support in my neighborhood from a number of very civic-minded citizens.

The door swings both ways on grammatical correctness. Especially when you are a paid-public servant...
