Personally, I would love to see the city of Minneapolis impliment a system like this on it's own. It's another vote for the people, another choice they get to make. It's funny how quick we are to label such a proposal as being part of this political camp or that. Last I checked, Switzerland wasn't run by a bunch of "Neocons" or anything of that nature. And they regularly vote on issues more detailed than what this proposal would bring about. Alls this system says is that if enough people don't seem happy with a specific levy increase, then there will be a referendum on it. It gives the community more time to disuss the issue and vote on it. I don't see how that means that programs will be many referendums let alone no votes. The people will vote for tax increases if they see value in them.

Subject: [Mpls] Turbocharged Truth-in-Taxation: NO!

I just wish that the neo-cons would apply some truth to some of their own proposals. Pawlenty's "Turbocharged Truth-in-Taxation" is nothing more than a proposal to ensure that no local government can ever get a tax increase -- even ones foisted on them because the neo-cons in the state legislature and the governor have deprived them of the revenue to carry on ordinary business.

Taxes are what we pay for living in a civilized society. It would probably be better to change the name from "taxes" to "dues," or some such name, just to remind people that its what we gotta pay to maintain our whole society.
