1. "Experts" thought the old library was to expensive to update to modern fire, safety, heating/AC and space needs. 2. The building was "old" (it was at the time of the Gateway renewal project) 3. There was a need for a building to kick start construction in the Gateway project. 4. Plans for a new building of some kind at 10th and Hennepin

While working at the train station as a kid...I did not know it was a reading room...thought it was just a wonderful sculpture.
