1. "Experts" thought the old library was to expensive to update to modern
fire, safety, heating/AC and space needs.
2. The building was "old" (it was at the time of the Gateway renewal
project)
3. There was a need for a building to kick start construction in the Gateway
project.
4. Plans for a new building of some kind at 10th and Hennepin

A great picture of the old library at 10th and Henn is at:
http://www.mplib.org/history/cg6.asp
as well as a brief history of the Mpls Public Library system

And the site on 10th and Hennepin is still a parking lot--44 years after the
old library was torn down
Sheldon Mains

Thanks Sheldon for the website...Sad it was torn down along with the
Metropoitan Building...also the reading room down by the Gateway where
people would get off the Great Northern train and go rest awhile before
continuing their journey. While working at the train station as a kid...I
did not know it was a reading room...thought it was just a wonderful
sculpture. A much earlier post stated that part of it is still at the Rose
Gardens by Lake Harriet...under wraps for the winter.
