[David Strand] I wonder how much it would cost to just take it Hennepin County wide. Perhaps even the Met Council would be interested in eventually taking it throughout the seven county metro area.
[Jeanne Massey] I agree with the question of how wireless access is most efficiently and effectively set up and provided throughout the metro area. It seems that initiative is coming from the local level - Chaska, as a municipality, has led the way, as have the airport and downtown as wireless hot spots. I also know that St. Louis Park and other cities are exploring a wireless future. I'm not familiar with any role among larger governmental entities (County or Met Council) taking the lead (they are not the contractors for current phone/cable/DSL service). If municipalities are in the driver seat on this, it raises the question of the possibility of intergovernmental efforts to ensure seamless wireless access throughout the metro area. Would intercity partnerships provide the opportunity for greater public leverage in contracts with the telecoms to set up and provide the service? Is it possible and/or desirable for Minneapolis to extend service to surrounding municipalities? Does anyone on the list know the extent to which intercity discussions/planning are happening? I'm very curious to see how other municipalities move forward - a la Chaska model, a la Minneapolis model, partnerships, something else? Jeanne Massey Kingfield REMINDERS: 1. Be civil!
