I agree with David. I do not see any justification for giving public tax
monies to private businesses. If the government is going to subsidize private
individuals in business, we are all equally deserving of this largesse. Just
give the money to me and I promise to use the money to build the stadium, hire
a staff to help me run the business and live happily off the profits. One
person asked me if I deserved it when I made this sarcastic point but he
completely missed my point. The point is that each and every one of us
deserves it if the government is going to be subsidizing the businesses of
private individuals. People assume Karl Pohlad deserves it more because he has
made a lot of money but almost everyone of us deserves it more because we NEED
it more. Since Karl Pohlad has made a lot of money, how is that a
justification for the government shoveling even more money on to him?
Private businesses, ever since local governments started subsidizing them
under the guise of promoting economic development, have trapped us all in a
vicious circle. It is doubtful that the TOTAL amount of economic development
has increased but local governments are now competing to see which of them can
offer the largest subsidy to attract the economic development to their area.
The only way off this vicious circle is for citizens to say firmly NO! NO
MORE!
While, as a socialist, I would be more than happy to see the advent of
socialism for everybody, I am adamantly opposed to socialism for the rich. I
am also against welfare for the rich and Robin Hood in reverse, taking from the
poor to give to the rich.
There is nothing of sports hating about this. I enjoy reading, both fiction
and non fiction, and listening to baroque music. But is that any justification
for subsidizing publishing companies so that I may enjoy cheap books and
baroque performance companies so that I may enjoy a plenitude of baroque music
to enjoy?
But that brings up my final suggestion. I also enjoy writing and I have a
1220 page unpublished novel. So institute a tax to subsidize publishing my
novel. I promise that I will need far less than hundreds of millions of
dollars to flood the country with copies of it so the tax will be far less than
0.015%. So it will amount to EVEN LESS than loose change for you.
