When the Greens had their opening press conference at City Hall for this
campaign season some of us went into the City Clerk's office to ask
specifically about the Lawn Sign date. We were told that August 1 is the
State deadline in state elections years but that there is no law in Mpls
about the date (don't know St. Paul). Then we asked "what happens if we put
signs up before Aug. 1" - she very dead-pan serious said " Nothing - but
people will hate you".
I personally am of the school - 6 weeks before (like in England and
coincidentally is about Aug. 1) and believe that lawn signs can be
perceived as visual pollution to some.
My two cents worth,

I believe this is a case where both Dann and Andy are
correct. It's probably unconstitutional to ban these
signs at any time but, jeezus, just because you can do
something doesn't mean you have to or should. These
signs do detract from neighborhood aesthetics. It'd be
nice to abide by a code of conduct that restricts them
to a limited campaign season. How about compromising
and sticking to bumber stickers until after Labor Day?
