The Nicollet Island debate has risen to new absurdity. First for Commissioner Young, when you recluse yourself from an issue, you must also not participate in the debate.
Second there is no conflict of interest period. Phyllis Kahn voted on University funding while an employee and Vivian Mason votes on the Lakes funding which improves her property value. No one raises a concern here. I challenge one of the De La Salle opponents and their myriad of attorneys to find a legal conflict. If there is none, the elected official should make the hard vote. That is why they were sent there. Where a Park Board Commissioners child goes or went to school should not on the table. Whenever this issue was raised with my children during City Council races, I refused to answer and told the inquisitor "None of your business." Are our children now cannon fodder for political assaults. Voting against your child's (or your) alumni association is not that difficult. The real issue here is the housing units are allowed in the Regional Park against all traditions but an athletic field that was part of the agreement is blocked. Athletic facilities are needed by our youth in Minneapolis. Yes, the children may have to take a bus, car or bicycle to the facility. We should be negotiating for more community use of the athletic facility and the design rather than blocking the field.
