I don't have any statistics to show you, but it is my impression that
crime does go up during tough economic times. I don't know that the
crimes would include murder. I do remember reading years ago that arson
went up during economic downturns because owners of businesses that were
going bust would set fire to the businesses for the insurance claims.
Also, men thrown out of work during downturns will get desperate enough,
in some situations, to turn to robbery. However, I do think Edwards
stepped over the line in this instance, particularly given the recent
history on the northside.
