I think that IRV is the single best step we could take toward real democracy in town.

Our current political discussion is bankrupt, and shows the bankruptcy of the DFL as the dominant political expression of our local culture.

The political discussion needs to focus on the fact that our urban infrastructure and lifestyle are founded on the premise that we will have an infinite, uninterruptible, and cheap supply of energy flowing in to us from all around the world. Our culture is so deeply rooted in this assumption that we do not see it at all.

While our local DFL and their state Republican partners discuss how to force a new regressive tax to build infrastructure which will make our debt and energy and transportation problems worse, we ought to be discussing how to raise progressive taxes to build infrastructure to pay off debt, become our own best energy source, and create a sustainable transportation paradigm.

Again -- Farheen Hakeem and don Johnson are the only two candidates really addressing reality-based politics in this election. The DFL continues to slide over the tough issue and focus on froth.

Katrina may very well shut down a third of the Gulf of Mexico oil and gas production for months. We can no longer settle for fantasy-based politics in Minneapolis. Check out the articles from the last few days at Energy Bulletin online. How can we make the changes we need, quickly and carefully?
